Skills & Responsibilities
Company officer since January 17, 2005, and member of Ballard´s executive team since February 23, 2004. Key responsibilies are to develop, implement and ensure strategic alignment of technology development to product development.
Responsible to Ballard´s Board of Directors for quarterly updates on technology and Intellectual Property.
Development and implementation of overall R&D strategy and budget for Ballard. R&D budget is in excess USD 13 million/yr. Leadership and budget responsibility for Ballard´s Intellectual Property Group, and related IP strategy development (>USD 3 million/yr).
Chairperson and member (Feb 2004 – Mar 2007) of Ballard´s Technology Approval Committee; the committee has ownership of, and responsibility for, all corporate technology resources up to and inclusing transition to manufacturing.
Key interface to Ford and DaimlerChrysler (DCX) research groups, representing Ballard on the Alliance Research Committee (includes Ford and DCX Directors of Fuel Cell programs). Significant experience in working with executives and senior managers at large global enterprises like Ford, DC and Ebara Corporation.
Participant in quarterly analyst conference calls; reviewer of news releases; responsible to BoD regarding technology matters; preparation of technology sections for Ballard´s Annual Information Form.
Build, maintain and mentor a high performance team (17 PhDs, 25 MSc, 30 BSc and 20 technicians; 3 IP lawyers; 3 patent agents) in unit cell components and stack R&D for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) applications.
Drive the development and capture of key intellectual property rights for fuel cell technologies, as well as develop licensing and cross-licensing strategies and implementation.
Work closely with VP Marketing & Business Development (Chief Customer Officer) to develop supplier and customer relationships.
Steering Committee member for key materials technology development partnerships.
